Gujarat bans book on Gandhi, Modi calls it perverse
A controversial book on Mahatma Gandhi was banned in his native state of Gujarat on Wednesday, with Chief Minister Narendra Modi saying its contents were perverse and defamed the icon of non-violence.
A resolution to ban it was moved in the assembly by Modi and was passed unanimously. The book, 'Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle With India', by Pulitzer-winning journalist Joseph Lelyveld, created a controversy after reviewers said it suggested that the Mahatma was a bisexual.
While Lelyveld has reportedly denied ever writing that Gandhi was a bisexual, Modi said he has displayed a perverted mentality in writing the book and hurt the sentiments of the masses.
"This publication defames the Mahatma and there is rising anger not only in Gujarat but in the entire country. The perversion shown in the writings not only deserves to be condemned in the strongest possible terms but cannot be tolerated. I know that the members of this august house share my feelings," he added.

CIA agents operating covertly in Libya
The CIA has deployed covert operatives into Libya to gather intelligence for military airstrikes and initiate contacts with rebels seeking to oust leader Muammar Gaddafi, The New York Times reported.
Citing unnamed US officials, the newspaper has reported online that small groups of CIA agents have been in Libya for several weeks seeking to blunt the effectiveness of Gaddafi's military. The US and its allies have been trying to learn more about the rebels and their plans for Libya.
The White House said shortly after the report first emerged that it would not comment on intelligence matters and that no decisions have been made on whether to arm the rebels.
US President Barack Obama has said that US ground troops would not be involved in the ongoing military campaign by the international coalition to protect civilians and enforce a no-fly zone under a UN mandate. Obama has called on Gaddafi to step down and end his 41-year rule.
The New York Times reported that British intelligence officers are also deployed inside Libya to direct airstrikes.
The reports come as the US and other countries in NATO debate whether to arm the rebels, who have suffered a series of setbacks in recent days under attacks from Gaddafi's better-equipped forces.
Obama said he has not ruled out providing weapons to the rebels.
"We're not ruling it out or ruling it in," spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement.
"We're assessing and reviewing options for all types of assistance that we could provide to the Libyan people, and have consulted directly with the opposition and our international partners about these matters."

Jaffna varsity students for Tamil culture
The Jaffna University Students’ Union is to launch a campaign to prevent the erosion of Tamil culture due to outside influences appearing in the wake of the end of the 30-year war, and the opening up road links between the hitherto isolated northern peninsula and the rest of Sri Lanka.
Details of the campaign were announced at a seminar on emerging trends in Jaffna’s culture held at the Kailasapathy Hall in Jaffna on Thursday.
VULGAR TAMIL FILMS: Briefing Express on the move, Union secretary Rangan said the baneful influence of the indecent and vulgar dialogues in films imported from Tamil Nadu was a matter of grave concern.
“The Tamil spoken in Jaffna is known for politeness and decency, but there is a danger of this changing with increasing exposure to Tamil films of the wrong kind,” he said.
According to the union, couples are misusing cinema halls and hotel rooms, and has called upon owners of these establishments to curb such tendencies.
Rangan said the relationship between the sexes, which was traditionally marked by segregation and mutual reserve in Jaffna, was changing for the worse. He attributed this to the influx and influence of the less conservative people from South Sri Lanka who had been pouring into the peninsula in large numbers after the end of the war in May 2009.
The union has said that it frowns on Hindu temples holding entertainment shows. Henceforth, temple authorities must organise only plays and lectures portraying the glories of Tamil culture and the achievements of the Tamil people.
Sherine Xavier of the Home for Human Rights said the fears of the Jaffna Tamils stemmed from the sudden influx of merchants and tourists from the Sinhalese community, who were culturally different.
Xavier pointed out that earlier, the LTTE had enforced, albeit unofficially and illegally, some kind of social order, and what it considered to be Tamil culture, but after the decimation of this group, no satisfactory substitute had been put in place. “The Lankan military is now charged with this responsibility, but the maintenance of law and order and culture are not the military’s job, but those of the police and the civil administration.” “Recently, some militarymen were themselves involved in the murder of a temple priest,” she pointed out.

"Sonia Gandhi says she is a friend of the Tamils, and we think she is telling the truth," said a spokesman for Tamils for Obama. "We think that Shivshankar Menon, who was Indian foreign secretary when the Sri Lankan civil war came to its end and the major massacres of Tamil civilians was going on, has shown that he is no friend of the Tamils. We ask Mrs. Gandhi to get rid of him. We said so in a letter that we just sent to Mrs. Gandhi."
Mrs. Gandhi, following her Commonwealth lecture given in London March 17th, stated "We are with the Tamils and I am very concerned about Sri Lanka." She was replying to a question asked by representatives of Global Tamil Forum (GTF), and we took her statement from GTF's press release.
"We were gratified to read that she said this," the Tamils for Obama spokesman said. "But we wanted to point out that not every Indian politician feels the same way. We especially think that if Shivshankar Menon had wanted to stop the massacre of Tamils near the end of the Sri Lankan civil war, he could have done it. As Indian foreign secretary he certainly had power to do this. Instead, he gave the government of Sri Lanka one pretext after another to continue the bloodshed.
"He showed that he is no peace maker and no friend of the Tamils. We suggested in our letter to Mrs. Gandhi that she use her influence to replace Menon with someone who is not so hostile to the Tamils."
An American diplomatic cable, meant to be secret but published by Wikileaks, reported that the Foreign Secretary (Mr. Menon) told U.S. Embassy Charge d'Affaires Peter Burleigh that the Indian government had advised Sri Lanka against rejecting out of hand UN offers to send an envoy to help resolve the Sri Lankan conflict. Menon "offered a suggestion that the government of Sri Lanka consider offering an amnesty to all but the hard core of the LTTE." There was much discussion but finally no agreement on what the core of the LTTE was. Weeks passed, nothing came of the proposal, and the massacre continued.
"This is the way Mr. Menon operated," the Tamils for Obama spokesman said. "The proposal was a smokescreen. It let the Sri Lankan army go on killing Tamil civilians while the diplomats focused on Mr. Menon's proposal. He did this again and again. Each time, the Sri Lankan government could continue massacring Tamils while pretending to negotiate ways to make the war less horrible.
"Mr. Menon is clever man," said the spokesman. "He knew what he was doing. He was helping to destroy the Tamils while pretending to be a peace maker. This is why we asked Mrs. Gandhi to move him to remove him from the Indian government."
